Farmers’ adoption of using organic fertilizer in rambutan Thong Pha Phum production, Kanchanaburi province
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background and Objective: The continuous use of chemical fertilizers has disrupted soil ecosystems, leading to degradation and unsustainable farming practices. This study aimed to examine the personal, economic, and social characteristics of rambutan farmers in Thong Pha Phum district, Kanchanaburi province, assess their knowledge and acceptance of organic fertilizers, and analyze factors influencing their adoption.
Methodology: Data were collected from 146 farmers using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics (Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum) and inferential statistics (t-test and F-test) were employed at a 0.01 significance level.
Main Results: Most respondents were female, with an average age of 61.29 years and over 30 years of farming experience. While chemical fertilizers were still the predominant type used, nearly half of farmers had received training or guidance on the use of organic fertilizers. Farmers demonstrated a high level of knowledge and acceptance of organic fertilizers (Mean = 3.60). Among the factors analyzed, only marital status showed a statistically significant influence (P < 0.01), with married farmers more likely to adopt organic fertilizers, possibly due to greater concern for family health and long-term production sustainability.
Conclusions: Promoting the use of organic fertilizers among farmers is essential to support sustainable agriculture. Government agencies and local institutions should implement promotional activities, such as demonstration plots, training programs, and supportive policies, to promote the adoption of organic fertilizers, particularly in targeted areas like Thong Pha Phum.
