Development needs and supporting approaches for young smart farmers in Kanchanaburi province
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background and Objective: Thailand’s agricultural sector faces critical challenges due to an aging population, a shortage of young labor, and rapid technological changes. Although the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has implemented the Young Smart Farmer (YSF) program to strengthen networks among new-generation farmers, limited participation and continuity remain in Kanchanaburi province. This study aimed to examine the socioeconomic characteristics of young farmers, assess development needs, analyze operational problems, test differences in development needs according to personal factors, and provide evidence to support appropriate development strategies.
Methodology: Data were collected from 164 YSF-certified young farmers between 2014 and 2024 using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics (Frequency, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA) were employed.
Main Results: Respondents averaged 39.33 years old, most held a bachelor’s degree, and primarily engaged in integrated farming. The highest development need was network strengthening, followed by skill and knowledge development, and advancements in agribusiness. Significant challenges included insufficient financial support, limited continuity of activities, and inadequate network linkages. Hypothesis testing revealed that gender, age, farming experience, and farm size were significantly associated (P < 0.05) with specific development needs, especially in knowledge, skills, and agribusiness advancement. Male farmers and those aged 41–60 years expressed higher needs in these areas, while no significant differences were found in network development needs across groups.
Conclusions: The findings emphasize the importance and urgency of promoting knowledge, management capabilities, financial support, and continuous access to networks. These measures are essential for enhancing competitiveness, strengthening occupational security, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the agricultural sector.
