Abstract

Breathing exercise is one method of non-medication treatment for hypertension. Studies on breathing patterns with blood pressure and autonomic nervous system function were insufficient, this study aimed to study patterns of slow deep breathing (SDBE) on blood pressure and heart rate variability. Twenty healthy participants with no underlying disease. Participants took a slow deep breathing exercise program, measuring blood pressure and heart rate variability before and after performed exercise. Significant lower the systolic blood pressure was observed after 12 minutes SDBE program (114.75 ± 13.04 vs. 105.30 ± 10.53, p < 0.05). The variation in heart rate after SDBE showed a significant increase in RMSSD (p <0.05) and high frequency (p <0.05) indicating Increase functioning of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) but low-frequency / high-frequency ratio was significantly lower (p <0.05). Breathing, following a deep breathing exercise program, could lower blood pressure values. Through mechanisms to increase the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system
