The Development of Nursing Supervision Program Model for the First-Line Manager based on 2P safety: SIMPLE (Medication error, Fall) at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Southern Thailand

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a model of nursing supervision program for first- line manager based on 2P safety: SIMPLE (Medication error, Fall) at a Tertiary Care Hospital in southern Thailand. The process of the nursing supervision model development composed of 5 stages: 1) situation analysis 2) synthesis model 3) Implement 4) Monitoring System and 5) Evaluation. The sample consisted of 26 first-line managers (head nurses) and 75 register nurses. Then research instruments were a knowledge questionnaire and a satisfaction questionnaire about nursing supervision. The statistics used in this study were descriptive statistics and paired t-test.
The results showed that 1) the developed model of nursing supervision program for first-line managers was based on Proctor model which included the supervision for knowledge and skill development, the supervision for career supports and the supervision for practices based on standard of nursing and 2) the knowledge of the first-line managers based on 2P safety before and after implementing the developed supervision program were not different. However, the first-line managers received higher satisfaction score after implementation of the supervision model with statistical significance at .05 (t = 3.19, p < .05). Also, the registered nurses received higher satisfaction score after implementation of the supervision model with statistical significance at (t = 3.15, p < .05).
