Effects of a Self-Management Enhancing Program Using a Tele-Nursing Service among Prisoners with Infected Hepatitis Virus, Central Prison, Udon Thani Province

This research is quasi-experimental, with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The objective was to compare the average knowledge scores and medication adherence behavior of prisoners infected with hepatitis B and C before and after participating in the program and to study the satisfaction of prisoners, a multidisciplinary team, and Udon Thani Central Prison officials with the program. The sample groups were: 1) prisoners infected with hepatitis B and/or C; 217 people were purposively selected according to inclusion criteria; and 2) a multidisciplinary team and 30 officials from Udon Thani Central Prison. Research tools were 1) the tool used in the experiment, which was the self-management enhancing program using a tele-nursing service among prisoners infected with hepatitis B and or C, and 2) the tools for data collection, which were a personal information questionnaire, knowledge scale, medication adherence behavior scale, and prisoner and service providers and multidisciplinary teams’ satisfaction questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test statistics. The research findings revealed a significant improvement in the mean knowledge score (mean=5.03, SD=0.30) and the mean medication adherence behavior score (mean=7.18, SD=0.76) post-implementation of the program compared to pre-experiment levels (p< 0.001). Prisoners (mean=4.71, SD=0.42), service providers, and multidisciplinary teams (mean=4.51, SD=0.53) reported high satisfaction scores. This study demonstrated that the self-management enhancing program using a tele-nursing service could improve prisoners’ knowledge and medication adherence behavior. However, there should be continuous follow-up. They were applied to care for prisoners with other health problems in prisons.
