The Relationship Between Student’s Academic Achievement in Secondary School and First-year Level of The School of Science, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find the relationship between academic achievement in secondary school and the first-year Grade Point Average (GPA) of students of the School of Science, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, particularly in the fields of Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Industrial Chemistry, Biological Technology, Applied Physics, and Applied Statistics. Data used in this research was the data of the first-year students of the School of Science, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, enrolled in academic year 2020, total of 501 students. Statistics used for analysis include the Analysis of Variance, the Kruskal-Wallis Analysis of Variance, the hypothesis test of 2 groups of related examples (t-test), and correlation analysis.
Research results are as follows: 1) Regarding the relationship between examination result at secondary school level, the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-NET) result, the first-year Grade Point Average, it was found that the GPA averagely more related to the O-NET than to the examination result at secondary school level and proceed in the same direction. It was also found that grade point average for the semester (GPS) in Semester 1 and Semester 2 is highly related and proceed in the same direction. 2) When finding the relationship of subject-based result of O-NET and group of subjects studied in the first year, it was found that the studied first-year subjects of Mathematics, Science, English and general studies are mostly related to the subjects of Mathematics, Science, English and Social Studies respectively in O-NET results
