Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study effected of Self-monitoring of blood
glucose to change food consumption behavior and control blood glucose among monks
with type II diabetes mellitus (DM). The subjects of the study were 49 monks studied
between October 1, 2013 - July 31, 2014 from Priest Hospital. The research instruments
were questionnaire monitoring DM monks’ behavior, handbook for diabetic monitoring,
and needles. Subjects received an education program for self-monitoring of blood glucose,
and were checked upon at two follow-up periods. Changes were assessed before and
after the program. Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires and self-recorded
dirary and dietary behavior changes by: 1) phone tracking, 2) analysis of blood glucose test
results from their diary, 3) after the trial operation, a check of blood sugar levels at the
laboratory. Data was analyzed by percentile, mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test.
The results were as follow: level of blood glucose after use self-monitoring of blood
glucose was significantly decreased from before the program at the level of 0.05
(t=2.671) and level of blood glucose cumulative average after self-monitoring of blood
glucose was significantly decrereased from before the program at the significance level of
0.05. (t=7.107). The finding about consumption behavior was that after self-monitoring of
blood glucose, monks were able to avoid desserts better than before the program at the
significance the level of 0.05 (t=4.648) and drinking soft drink behavior after using selfmonitoring
of blood glucose decreased from before the program at the significance level
of 0.05 (t=3.946)
