Abstract
The purposes of this research were to construct a programmed instruction to enhance learning on Taxonomy of Living Things in the Fundamental Biology Course to meet the 80/80 efficiency criterion and to study learning achievement of students, who took the Fundamental Biology Course, after learning from the programmed instruction. The research sample consisted of 46 students who took the Fundamental Biology Course in the first semester of the 2008 academic year, obtained by purposive sampling. The employed research instruments were a programmed instruction to enhance learning on Taxonomy of Living Things comprising five learning units, namely, Principles of Organism Classification, the Monera Kingdom, the Protista Kingdom, the Plant Kingdom, and the Animal Kingdom; five learning management plans, and a 5-choice multiple choice achievement test comprising 30 test items with difficulty indices ranging from 0.27 to 0.80, discriminating indices ranging from 0.33 to 0.75, and reliability coefficient of 0.85 for the whole test. Statistics employed for data analysis were the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and dependent sample t-test. Research findings revealed that the developed programmed instruction to enhance learning on Taxonomy of Living Things was efficient at 83.72/80.20 which was higher than the set efficiency criterion; and the post-learning achievement scores of students learning from the programmed instruction to enhance learning on Taxonomy of Living Things were significantly different from their pre-learning counterparts at the .01 level.
