Abstract

The objectives of this study were to analyze the value chain, costs and returns from A.muelleri Blume cultivated by the highland people of Tak province, using 131 samples. Data collection was done by interviewing and analyzing their daily activities with the value chain concept and the net present value (NPV) for 3 years of project life was evaluated with a discount rate of 5%. The results of this study indicated that most people were male (71.76%), were not educated 51.15% and 93.13% were Karen. The people had an average experience of 3.30 years in A. muelleri Blume cultivation. The average members in a household were 5.37 persons who had an average A. muelleri Blume cultivation area of 2.58 rai per household. The value chain study found that the production factors used for A. muelleri Blume cultivation were the type of A. muelleri Blume, fertilizers, herbicides and labor. The cultivation process started from site preparation, A. muelleri Blume type preparation, planting, growing, harvesting and selling their products. This study also found that 30 people harvested underground A. muelleri Blume produce only and 3 people harvested the underground A. muelleri Blume underground produce along with bulbil products. People did not process the products before selling. In addition, the study found that 96.97% of the people sold their underground produce having weight > 0.5 kilogram to the local middleman for 5 - 8 Baht per kilogram and 3.03% of them sold their product to Agricultural Cooperative at 10 Baht per kilogram. The underground produces whose weight was less than 0.5 kilogram and the bulbil products were collected to be used for cultivation next year. The value assessment of the investment incurred in A. muelleri Blume production found that people who used a 6, 5 and 2 patterns got a return of NPV equal to 11,540.32, 3,164.58 and 1,818.21 Baht per rai, respectively, with NPV > 0 indicating profit.
