Abstract

The objectives of this research were to compare youth and adult knowledge about the mangrove ecosystem, to evaluate visitors’ opinions on the mangrove interpretive sign system and nature trail, and to develop suggestions for improving the trail and signage. Data were collected using designed questionnaires in interviews. A sample of 400 visitors, divided into two groups (youth and adult) and each respondent was asked to fill out the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and a t-test were used to analyze the survey data.

The results revealed that youths’ knowledge of the mangrove ecosystem was not statistically different from that of adult visitors at the significance level of 0.05. Likewise, their opinions about the mangrove interpretive sign system and the nature trail were not statistically different. Furthermore, youth and adult visitors provided similar suggestions.  Both groups agreed the interpretive signs should be short and concise with appropriate illustrations and that additional visitor facilities should be provided. The biggest apparent difference of opinion was that the younger visitors expressed concerns about the cleanliness of the trail.
