Abstract

Genetic variation in the gas exchange characteristics and biomass production of 10 month-old Acacia mangium seedlings was studied under laboratory condition. Six provenances representing the natural range of A. mangium were selected for the present study. Gas exchange characteristics at various temperature including net photosynthesis, total photosynthesis, dark respiration and photorespiration were measured and calculated. Results showed that the response of both total and net phatosynthesis to temperature under constant light intensity varied significantly among provenances. Photorespiration and dark respiration point differed among provenances, but were not statistically significant. The provenance from Papua New Guinea (No. 13459) showed remarkably low photosyntheric rate throughout the Iecaperature range. However, this provenance showed distinctly high total biomass production. The result was consistent to field performances.
