Abstract

Comparative study of mineral composition deposited in the sediment of blood cockle culture area in Ban Don Bay, Surat Thani province, was investigated. Sediment samples were collected in rainy season (August) from eight stations of the east and the west coasts of Ban Don Bay. Three replications each were done and those samples were compared to the ones kept from the Tapi river mouth. X-Ray Diffraction Technique (XRD) was use for analysis inorganic compounds. The results showed that the sediment characteristics were different among three areas. They indicated sandy clay, sandy soil and clay characters sampled from the east coast, west coast and the Tapi river mouth, respectively. There were 12 types of minerals deposited in the sediments; quartz, sanidine, montmorillonite foresterite, calcium oxide, calcium titanium, carnallite, neotocite, orthoclase iron oxide, mica and olivine. The basic minerals found in all stations were quartz, sanidine and montmorillonite. The composition of minerals in the east coast around Tha thong estuary (Station 2 and 3) was like the Tapi river mouth area more than those from the west coast around Tha chang estuary (Station 7 and 9) and Pumreang (station 10, 11 and 12). Mineral elements in Tapi river mouth area and the east coast of Ban don bay were found forsterite and calcium oxide found in the station 2, but not in station 3, however, it had found iron oxide in station 3 which showed the same as that in the west coast of Bandon bay.
