Feeding Milking Cows with Some Legume leaves
Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the problems of low cost of milk production by feeding milking cows with legume leaves (Leucaena Leucocephala). Eight, 50-75% Holstein-Freesian, milking cows were randomly allotted to two treatments according to the change-over design. The dietary treatments were as follows: 1) grass and leucaena leaves at the ratio of 2 : 1 and supplement with feed concentrate at 2 kg/hd/d 2) only grass and supplement with feed concentrate at 1 kg per 2 kg of milk obtained. Feeding trial lasted for 60 days. Roughage intake of animals were 7.3 and 5.3 kg/hd/d (P<0.05), respectively, concentrate intake of animals were 1.79 snd 3.00 kg/hd/d (P<0.05), respectively, feed intake of animals were 9.11 and 8.30 kg/hd/d (P<0.05), respectively and total feed intake were 2.55 and 2.37% of body weight (P<0.05), respectively. There were on significant difference (P<0.05), between milk yield, percent fat and percent protein. Throughout the experimental period, the cost per kg milk were 2.31 and 2.61 Baht respectively.
