Native Fishing Gears in Inland Waters.
Abstract
Traditional fisheries in Thailand had been conducted for a long time by farmers with native fishing gears, which were made of native materials, such as, bamboos and rattans. In Thailand, there were 148 types of inland native fishing gears used in 1935. In 1984 most of the native fishing gears gradually disappeared because of their lower efficiency and durability than those of net fishing gears. The survey of native fishing gears in Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi, Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Sing Buri, and Lop Buri, from February 1984 to January 1985, revealed 27 types with 32 variations native fishing gears still in operation. There were 32 species, 22 genera, and 14 families of aquatic animals caught by those fishing gears. Twenty four variations of these fishing gears are preserved in Kasetsart University Museum of Fishery and Fishing Gears, for future study and exhibition.
