Effects of Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis on survival and growth performance in Rugose frog (Hoplobatrachus rugulosus)

Rugose frog (Hoplobatrachus rugulosus), an economic species, is widely cultivated due to rapid growing, less cultivation area, short cultivation period, and domestically and internationally high demands. However, one of the major problems in its cultivation is unstable growth, resulting from high stocking density and/or unappropriated nutrition, which leads to the difference in size, frogs’ cannibalism, and low production, although size measurement implemented. The objective of this research was to study the effects of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) combined in five levels, namely, 0%(control), 1.5%, 3.0%, 4.5%, and 6.0% into feeding formula to investigate survival, growth, and haematology levels of H. rugulosus raised in cement ponds for eight weeks. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used to conduct the five treatments with three replications. The result indicated that survival rate, final weight, weight gain, average daily gain, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio of H. rugulosus cultivated with A. platensis level of 4.5% was best but not significantly different (P>0.05). However, leukocyte, erythrocyte, haemoglobin, and haematocrit of H. rugulosus cultivated with A. platensis level of 4.5% were highest and significantly different (P<0.05) compared to the control group. In conclusion, the present results revealed that dietary supplementation with A. platensis at 4.5% level is likely to increase survival and growth performance in H. rugulosus that farmer could apply this information to improve their production.
