Abstract

Lower back pain is a major problem caused by lumbar instability. Exercise using unstable devices can stimulate neuromuscular control that improved lumbar stability and postural stability. The aim of this study was to the comparison of lumbar stability and postural stability between swiss ball exercise and sling exercise in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain (NCLBP). Thirty-two participants with NCLBP were divided into the swiss ball exercise group (n=16) and the sling exercise group (n=16). Both groups received exercise twice a week for four weeks. All participants performed exercise 15 repetitions per set for 3 sets. The outcome measures were composed of Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Modified Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (MODQ) and Modified Isometric Stability Test (MIST). In addition, the sway area and sway velocity were measured by accelerometer. The repeated two-way ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. The results showed a significant decrease in pain intensity, functional disability, sway area and sway velocity in both groups after exercise (p<0.05). The reduction in VAS and MODQ for the swiss ball exercise group was significantly higher than the sling exercise group. The level of stability was demonstrated significant improvement from baseline in both groups (p<0.05). The MIST in the swiss ball exercise group was showed more improvement than the sling exercise group with significantly (p<0.05). Moreover, the postural sway demonstrated no significant difference between both groups. The findings suggest that the ball exercise is more effective in reduced pain intensity, functional disability, and postural sway. Furthermore, the level of stability is more improved in the ball group.
