The study of raising conditions and SWOT analysis of cattle fattening production in Phayao province

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to study the rearing conditions, management, marketing, problems and obstacles in raising fattening cattle of smallholder farmers in Phayao Province. Which were divided into 2 groups, consisting of 10 short period cattle fattening farms and 23 long period cattle fattening farms. A semi-structured interview method was used to collect data and all data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The results of this study found the socioeconomic characteristics of two groups that the most of farmers were male (90.91%) raised fattening cattle as a supplementary occupation (66.67%). Both groups had similar rearing conditions by raised in intensive systems (100.00%). The majority of breed were Charolais x Thai native crossbred cattle (78.50%). In marketing, the majority of farmers sold their cattle to Dok Kham Tai fattening cattle cooperative, Phayao Beef community enterprise and middlemen (69.70%, 18.18%, and 9.09%, respectively). Characteristics of selling by carcass weight or carcass grade or live weight (87.88%). The income of fattening cattle was more than 90,000 baht per year (72.73%), satisfaction with the selling price was moderate (78.79%). In term of SWOT analysis revealed that Strengths: the farmers grouped together to form cooperatives and community enterprises, can earn household income. Have the skills and knowledge of farm management. There is a certain market to support it. Weaknesses: farmers are quite old. Little experience, lack of knowledge in managing various farming. Opportunities: there is an opportunity to export fattening cattle for sale abroad and increase trade opportunities for farmers to export to neighboring countries such as Lao, Vietnam and China that will increase trade opportunities for farmers. Threats: lack of production plan, cannot control quality and production volume. The efficiency of fattening cattle production is of relatively low quality, the standard does not meet market demand.
