The effects of a video-assisted instructional program on knowledge and preparatory practices for pulmonary function testing among patients undergoing diagnostic evaluation for respiratory diseases at an urban tertiary hospital

Abstract

This two-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study aimed to compare knowledge and preparatory practice scores for pulmonary function testing within and between groups. The sample consisted of 50 patients undergoing diagnostic evaluation for respiratory diseases, selected by purposive sampling and equally assigned to a control group and an experimental group, with 25 participants in each group. The experimental group received a video-assisted instructional program via the LINE application for 4 weeks, while the control group received standard care. The research instruments included a demographic questionnaire, a knowledge assessment, and a preparatory practice assessment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Baseline characteristics between groups were compared using the Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and independent t-test. Knowledge and practice scores before and after the intervention within each group were compared using the dependent t-test, while comparisons between the control and experimental groups were performed using the independent t-test.                                                                       

The results showed that: For within-group comparisons, the experimental group’s mean knowledge score increased from 12.60 (S.D. = 3.03) to 15.60 (S.D. = 1.87), and the mean practice score increased from 1.71 (S.D. = 0.29) to 2.44 (S.D. = 0.26), with statistically significant differences (t = -5.16 and -7.53, respectively; p<0.001). In contrast, the control group showed no significant differences in either outcome before and after the study (p = 0.831 and 0.606, respectively). For between-group comparisons, there were no significant differences in either outcome between the two groups at baseline (p = 0.918 and 0.849, respectively). After the intervention, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean knowledge score than the control group [15.60 (S.D. = 1.87) vs. 12.81 (S.D. = 3.00); t = -3.90, p<0.001] and a significantly higher mean practice score [2.44 (S.D. = 0.26) vs. 1.75 (S.D. = 0.36); t = -7.75, p<0.001]. The findings support the use of the video-assisted instructional program to enhance patients’ knowledge and preparatory practices for pulmonary function testing.
