Comparative study of total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity of ethanolic extracts and essential oils from pericarp and seed of Zanthoxylum limonella Alston
Keywords:

This research aims to compare the total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity of ethanolic extracts and essential oils from the pericarp and seed of Makhwaen (Zanthoxylum limonella Alston), a local plant species found in Pong Yaeng Subdistrict, Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province. This study found that the ethanolic extract of the pericarp provided the highest yield at 20.28% and total phenolic content at 132.69 mg GAE/g extract, whereas the seed extract showed a higher total flavonoid content of 68.91 mg QE/g extract. Regarding antioxidant activity via the DPPH assay using ascorbic acid and trolox as positive controls, the ethanolic pericarp extract exhibited the most potent radical scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 1.48 mg/mL, whereas ascorbic acid and Trolox had IC50 values of 0.00748 and 0.00954 mg/mL, respectively. These results demonstrate that Zanthoxylum limonella Alston represents a potent source of phenolic compounds and antioxidants, offering a strategic approach to enhancing the value of local herbs and supporting the development of future commercial products.
