Background and Objectives Simulation-based training for intramuscular gluteal injections is critical to patient safety, particularly to prevent iatrogenic sciatic nerve injury. This research and development (R&D) study aimed to: 1) develop and evaluate student ratings on the quality, functionality, and perceived efficacy of a realistic gluteal intramuscular injection training manikin, and 2) compare students’ injection skill performance and evaluation ratings against established benchmark criteria.
Methods The study utilizes a research and development design. The sample comprised 45 third- and fourth-year nursing students selected via simple random sampling. The research instruments included an innovative gluteal injection simulator, a student evaluation questionnaire, and a behavioral observation scale for intramuscular injection skills. Content validity indices (IOC) ranged from 0.67 to 1.00, with internal consistency reliability Cronbach’s alpha of 0.78 and 0.89, respectively. Data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and one-sample t-tests.
Results
- The simulator’s external layer, made from natural rubber latex, exhibited realistic skin turgor and clear anatomical landmarks. The internal structure incorporated a fluid drainage system to facilitate repeated practice.
- The overall user evaluation rating for the simulator was at the highest level (M = 4.76, S.D. = 0.49)
- Nursing students' mean skill performance score was significantly higher than the benchmark criterion of 80 % (M= 97.53, S.D. = 2.62). Furthermore, the overall evaluation rating for the simulator was significantly higher than the good performance threshold (> 3.50) (M = 4.76, S.D. = 2.62), Which ware statistically significant at .001 level.
Conclusions and Recommendations This innovative simulator is highly effective for integration into both lab simulations and practical nursing curricula due to its high anatomical fidelity. Future developments should focus on enhancing the granularity of underlying anatomical structures.
