Abstract

The Integration local herbs with the use of innovation and technological knowledge to create products that have the identity of the community. It is considered one of the sustainable local developments. This brings benefits to the community in terms of generating income, self-reliance and economic strength of the community. This research aims to formulate and evaluate herbal ointments containing Zingiber montanum extract. Z. montanum are herbs that can be found in the local area and it used to create medicinal recipes based on traditional folk wisdom. Then evaluate the product, including evaluating physical characteristics, pH value, viscosity and analysis of active ingredients in herbal ointments using (Gas Chromatograph - Mass Spectrometry, GC/MS) method. The research results found that ointments containing Z. montanum extract in all 4 formulas had no different physical characteristics. However, the formulation consisting of Z. montanum extract, beeswax, white soft petrolatum, lanolin, cetearyl alcohol, borneol, camphor, menthol, and methyl salicylate in a ratio of 7.5%, 2.5%, 42.5%, 2.5%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 5.0%, 25.0%, and 7.5%, respectively, exhibited the most suitable pH and viscosity values. Furthermore, the active ingredient analysis revealed the presence of Camphene and beta-Pinene, which are terpenoids and monoterpenes with anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. Consequently, this formulation is highly suitable for further commercial development in the future.
