Abstract

This research aimed to study the effect of sulfate concentration in synthetic wastewater on the performance in wastewater treatment of reverse osmosis using a membrane TW30-1812-75GPD. In this study, synthetic wastewater with sulfate concentrations of 500, 700, 1,000, 1,300, 1,500, 1,800 and 2,000 mg/L was used. The concentrations of sulfate used were close to those found in the actual wastewater generated from the rubber production process. From the study of the permeate flow rate, it was found that the increase of sulfate concentration, causing the membrane to become more clogged, resulted in the decrease of permeate flow rate. The permeate flow rates of the synthetic wastewater with sulfate concentrations of 500, 700, 1,000, 1,300, 1,500, 1,800 and 2,000 mg/L were 36.24%, 41.41%, 46.62%, 54.03%, 60.62%, 62.35% and 67.46% lower than that of the water without sulfate, respectively. However, it was found that the sulfate concentration in synthetic wastewater did not affect sulfate removal efficiency, total dissolved solids removal efficiency, conductivity reduction efficiency and pH of the water after treatment.
