Influence of Semi-Intensive and Free-Range Farming Systems on Gastrointestinal Parasitic Infections in Meat Goats: A Case Study of a Smallholder Farm

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of semi-intensive and free-range farming systems on gastrointestinal parasitic infections in meat goats, using a smallholder farm as a case study. The research was conducted by collecting fecal samples from 74 female crossbred meat goats, aged 1-1.5 years, from a smallholder farm (17 goats in semi-intensive group and 57 goats in free-range group) to quantify parasite eggs and oocysts in the fecal samples using the McMaster technique. The results demonstrated that the farming system significantly influenced both the type and prevalence of parasites in the fecal samples (P < 0.05). The free-range group had a higher prevalence of Strongyle-type eggs and Coccidia (Eimeria spp.) oocysts than the semi-intensive group (98.25% vs. 70.59% and 100.00% vs. 94.74%, respectively) and had 3.58 times higher in parasite eggs and oocysts per gram of faeces. The results of this study indicated that free-range farming system were more susceptible to gastrointestinal parasite infections in meat goats than semi-intensive farming system. Therefore, proper farm management and deworming programs consistent with the farming system should be emphasized.
