Local Wisdom in the Utilization and Management of Pai Tong (Dendrocalamus asper) for the Production of Ranad Thum Piece

Abstract

              This study explores the knowledge surrounding the use of Pai Tong (Dendrocalamus asper (Schult. & Schult.f.) Backer) for crafting Ranad Thum bars and analyzes management approaches within the community forest of Ban Khlong Si Siad, Hin Tang Subdistrict, Muang District, Nakhon Nayok Province. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three key informants and analyzed using descriptive statistics, alongside environmental analysis via SWOT and TOWS matrices.

              Findings reveal that the specific cultivar used, locally known as "Pai Tong Mo", is primarily sourced from Nakhon Nayok Province. Suitable bamboo for Ranad Thum bars is over five years old, has a smooth surface free of defects, with internode lengths ranging from 35.5 centimeters to 50.8 centimeters. Management practices for Pai Tong fall into four categories: (1) shoot selection and culm raising, (2) supplemental planting, (3) cutting techniques, and (4) monitoring and maintenance. Approximately 10.12% of total Pai Tong harvested is used in Ranad Thum production. A key challenge identified is the conversion of bamboo-growing areas to other economic crops. The study recommends four management strategies: (1) enhancing collaboration between Pai Tong users and government agencies, (2) providing academic training on product management, (3) offering specialized training for Ranad Thum production, and (4) promoting intercropping of Pai Tong with other economic crops.
