Abstract

Klong Tamru Sub-district, Mueang District, Chonburi Province is located at the mouth of the Bang Pakong River, covering an area of 15.2 square kilometers (approximately 9,500 rai). It has a coastline adjacent to the Gulf of Thailand for a length of 6.5 kilometers. The coastline is a mudflat extending into the sea, and there is a mangrove forest near the shore covering an area of approximately 1,100 rai. This study aims to study and design a coastal erosion prevention approach using bamboo structures, and to use a public participation process to assess the effectiveness of wave-retarding structures. The steps of the study include surveying oceanographic and coastal environmental data to determine a demonstration area, then creating a mathematical model and a physical model to design a bamboo structure that is appropriate for the actual operation area, along with organizing a community participation process to design an appropriate coastal erosion prevention approach. One of the spatial innovations of this study is the use of bamboo structures planted in a herringbone pattern, which is a natural material that is environmentally friendly and promotes sediment accumulation. The experimental results found that: The bamboo structure, which is planted in a zigzag pattern in 3 rows along the 1,200-meter length, with a distance between bamboo poles of 4.5 centimeters (or 0.6 times the diameter of the bamboo poles), with a gap of approximately 10 meters wide to allow small fishing boats to enter and exit, can reduce the average water current speed by 48.75 percent and result in the accumulation of sediment behind the bamboo poles as high as 2.43 centimeters within 1 month. In addition, it also promotes the establishment of a coastal resource conservation network in the community, which links coastal conservation with the sustainable restoration of natural resources and the environment.
