Abstract
Berberine from crude methanol extract of Coscinium fenestratum stem was purified by column chromatography using methanol : acetic acid : water solvent system (13 : 0.7 : 1). The berberine structure was elucidated by spectroscopic techniques. After that, the biological activities of berberine were investigated, including α-glucosidase and amylase inhibitory activities, antioxidant activities, and cytotoxicity against human lung cancer cell line A549. We found that berberine showed effective cytotoxicity against A549 cell line with an IC50 value of 20.33±3.51 μg/mL. Therefore, this study provided important information for a promising lead compound for of anticancer drug development.
