Program of Exercise and Lung Function Enhancement in Elderly Workers
Main Article Content
Abstract
At present, Thailand has entered an aging society, with the elderly population increasing rapidly. In 2020, labor status data showed that 36.9% of the elderly were still working, most of whom were informal workers engaged in agricultural and fisheries. Aging is often accompanied by physical and mental changes, such as a decline in lung function capacity and a reduction in the gas exchange surface area. Exposure to risk factors such as fine particles, gases, vapors, and smoking can further decrease lung capacity. Therefore, maintaining the health of the elderly, particularly through physical activity, is essential. Physical activity suitable for both the general population and the elderly is determined by factors such as intensity, duration, and frequency of exercise. A review of the literature indicates that various types of exercise can improve lung function in the elderly including Qigong training, breathing exercises, Phu Thai dance training, mouth-wrapped breathing exercises, Pilates training, and singing exercise. One particular suitable form of exercise for the elderly is a breathing management program using elastic bands. This program consists of 10 poses and should be practiced regularly, at least three days per week, to help maintain respiratory health in older adults.
