Enhancing the Growth of Rice Seedlings by Soaking Seeds in Photosynthetic Bacteria

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of seed soaking with photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) on seedling growth compared with soaked-seed with water. Six seed soaking methods and two rice varieties were arranged in a 6 x 2 Factorial in CRD with 3 replications. Different seed soaking methods consisted of water 24 hours (T1), water 48 hours (T2), PSB 1:10, V/V 24 hours (T3), PSB 1:10, V/V 48 hours (T4), PSB 1:20, V/V 24 hours (T5) and PSB 1:20, V/V 48 hours (T6). The two varieties were RD6 and RD15. This experiment was divided into 2 parts. The first was a germination test on the top of paper in the laboratory room and the second was a germination test in the seed tray in the greenhouse. The result found that the percentage of germination was not significant difference between top of paper and seed tray testing methods (p >0.05). However, there were highly significant differences among seed soaking treatments in shoot length and root length tested on the top of paper, including seedling height and leaf greenness tested on the seed tray (p<0.001). For the germination test on top of paper, shoot length and root length at 7 days old seedling of PSB 1:20, V/V 48 hours (T6) were the highest at 9.03 and 7.55 cm, respectively compared with the others while soaking with water was the lowest at 4.41 and 4.50 cm., respectively. These accorded with the germination teste under the seed tray. Shoot length and leaf greenness of seedlings at 14 days old under T6 showed the highest shoot length (19.96 cm) and leaf greenness (17.03 SPAD-unit) compared with the others while the treatment of soaking with water provided the lowest at 7.93 cm and 3.64 SPAD-unit, respectively. This result indicated that soaking seeds with photosynthetic bacteria can enhance rice seedlings.
