Main Article Content
Abstract
Various herbal vegetables provide a variety of health benefits to the body. However, the contamination of pesticides in these herbs could bring about negative effects to consumer’s health. This research is tasked to study about the pesticide residues in herbs from markets in Ubon Ratchathani Province. The samples are selected from a wholesale market in Ubon Ratchathani. The inclusion criteria includes the samples of herbs with known medical properties which are sold at the Ubon Ratchathani wholesale markets and contain parts which are used as medicine. The pesticide residues are tested using the MJPK test kit obtained from the Department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health. The result showed that 14 samples meet the criteria from 5 wholesale sources. The rest 5 samples found pesticide residues at the critically unsafe level, including garlic (100 %), coriander (60 %), guinea-pepper (40 %), water convolvulus (40 %) and shallots (20 %). Moreover, there are samples which are found to reach 100% unsafe level of pesticide residues including pepper, galangal, sweet basil, lemon basil and wild betel leaf bush. As for the herbal vegetables that are found, the pesticide residues are mostly found in freshly eaten vegetables. It is very harmful to the body as we consume these vegetables. Therefore, a good level of understanding for herbal vegetables consumption and pesticide management is necessary.
