Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the biogas potential from rice straw through pretreatment and co-digestion processes. The experiment was conducted in two phases. The first phase compared the chemical composition of untreated rice straw with rice straw mixed with spent mushroom substrate (SMS) at ratios of 3:1 and 5:1 (rice straw: SMS), with particular focus on cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content (dry weight basis). The results showed that SMS facilitated the degradation of hemicellulose, as evidenced by a marked reduction in hemicellulose content in the mixed samples relative to untreated rice straw. Untreated rice straw contained cellulose at 33.76%, hemicellulose at 34.90%, and lignin at 21.94%, whereas the 3:1 mixture yielded cellulose at 35.50%, hemicellulose at 16.29%, and lignin at 28.30%, and the 5:1 mixture yielded cellulose at 37.36%, hemicellulose at 18.11%, and lignin at 25.77%. The second phase investigated biogas production from co-digestion of cattle manure with the rice straw–SMS mixture. Three treatment groups were established, each conducted in duplicate, using the 5:1 rice straw-to-SMS ratio combined with cattle manure at proportions of 100:0, 90:10, and 70:30 (rice straw–SMS mixture: cattle manure). The analysis of biogas production revealed that the three substrate mixing ratios did not differ significantly in terms of biogas yield (F=0.40, P>0.05).
