Abstract

This study aimed to identify the factors that contribute to fire response knowledge and performance of security guards at Ubon Ratchathani University. Specific assessments were used to score their fire response knowledge and performance.  The results from ninety-five security guards indicated that their fire response knowledge and performance were at advanced level. The results of correlational analysis showed that there was no significant correlation between the level of their knowledge and performance and their sex, age, work experience, fire training and previous experience of fire drills. However, the study did show that there was a significant positive correlation between their level of education and their knowledge and performance. Furthermore, during the interviews, security officers were asked to indicate any factors that affected their fire response knowledge and performance. The majority of participants commented that, firstly, since they were assigned to work in different areas and duties, they had no chance to counter fire incidents. Secondly, although they had undertaken fire training, most of them could not remember any of it. This study advises that the University should provide additional training courses for security officers. Regular practice of firefighting and fire drills are needed to ensure that security officers can effectively  respond to any fire incidents that might occur. This is particularly important for those employees who work in high risk locations such as canteens, laboratories and dormitories.
