The Correlated between Parenting Styles and Adolescents Risk Behaviors

Abstract

This Correlation Descriptive Research was aimed to study parenting styles, risk behaviors and examining correlation between parenting styles and adolescent risk behaviors. The sample was simple randomized from 150 parents or guardians who raised up their adolescents aged between 15-19 years-old and lived in Warin Chamrap district, Ubon Ratchathani province. The study tool consisted of self-administered questionnaires in relation to parenting styles and risk behaviors of adolescents. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistic and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient.                                                                                                        The results showed that parenting styles of most parents focused on strengthening attachment 36 %, protection 21.3%, increasing maturity 20%, strengthening attachment and protection 10%, strengthening attachment and increasing maturity 6.7%, increasing maturity and protection 4%, and all of 3 parenting styles (strengthening attachment, increasing maturity and protection) 2%. In term of adolescent risk behaviors were risky motorcycle driving 20.7%, drug and substance abuse 12 %, violence 10.7%, sexual risk behavior 10%, depression and risk to suicide 7.3%. The correlation between parenting styles and adolescent risk behaviors (driving with risk, violence, depression and risk to suicide, drug and substance use and sexual risk behavior) was statistical significant at p < 0.05.
