มีการนำเส้นไหมหม่อนมาใช้ในการผลิตเครื่องนุ่งห่มและเป็นชีววัสดุทางการแพทย์คือ ไหมเย็บแผลมาหลายร้อยปีแล้ว คุณสมบัติที่ดีเยี่ยมของเส้นไหมทำให้มีการนำไปใช้งานในด้านอื่นเพิ่มมากขึ้น จากรายงานการศึกษาวิจัยต่างๆ พบว่า ไฟโบรอินของไหมสามารถออกแบบให้มีรูปแบบที่หลากหลาย โดยสามารถผสมกับชีววัสดุอื่นๆ ได้เป็นอย่างดีทำให้เกิดความเหมาะสมต่อการใช้งานที่จำเพาะ ทั้งในส่วนของโครงสร้างและบทบาทหน้าที่ ทำให้สามารถนำไหมไปใช้งานได้แตกต่างกันขึ้น เช่น เครื่องสำอาง สารเติมแต่งในอาหารและเครื่องดื่ม สารเคลือบป้องกันแบคทีเรีย หรืออุปกรณ์เสริม ปัจจุบัน การศึกษาวิจัยที่เกี่ยวกับไหมมุ่งพัฒนาประเด็นไปในการเตรียมไหมให้เป็นชีววัสดุสำหรับนำไปใช้ในงานด้านวิศวกรรมเนื้อเยื่อและระบบนำส่งยา

Abstract

Silk fibers from silkworms have been used in textiles production and as biomedical suture material for centuries. The excellent properties of this fi ber are attractive for other applications. More recent studies suggest that the silk fi broin exhibit additional rationale for designing various forms. Additionally, silk fi bers have comparable biocompatibility with other commonly used biomaterials to tailor for specifi c applications in both of structural and biological functions. This helps to apply silk in different fi elds like cosmetics, food and drink additives, antibacterial coating or supplementary devices. To date, silk is gradually focused to address as biomaterial for tissue engineering as well as drug delivery system applications.
