Suicide Attempts among Psychiatric Patients in Khonkaen Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital

The Objective of this study was to examine the characteristics of psychotic patients with suicide attempts in Khonkaen Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital The retrospective investigation of patients’ fi le with suicide attempts among 2,771 patients admitted in the Khon kaen Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital in 2011 was conducted. The rate of suicide attempts was found to be 0.5% among all the psychiatric patients (2,771 cases). We found that most patients were male (78.6%) and aged 12-50 years with average 28.5 years. Patients with schizophrenia and psychotic disorder were the major patients with suicide attempt. The average length of hospital stay (median) 27.1± 17.7 (27.5) days. The suicide attempts occurred within the first month of hospitalization and attempted suicide for the first time. The most common method was hanging (64.3%). A reason for suicide attempt was homesick nees and family problems.
