Abstract

Diabetes is a disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels, caused by insufficient insulin secretion or abnormal insulin function. One approach to treating diabetes is to lower blood sugar levels by inhibiting carbohydrate-digesting enzymes, such as alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase. In this study, a 95% alcohol extract of D. disjunctus was found to contain important phytochemicals, including flavonoids, coumarins, tannins, terpenoids, and steroids such as vanillin, trans-squalene, and phytosterol. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH method, with an IC50 value of 15.7 µg/mL, indicating strong antioxidant potential. The total phenolic content was measured at 287.54 mg GAE per gram of extract. The alpha-glucosidase inhibition activity of the D. disjunctus extract showed significantly higher efficacy than the positive control (acarbose). The alpha-amylase inhibition effect of the extract was 74.55±1.80 µg/mL, which is lower than that of acarbose (416.16±3.10 µg/mL). Therefore, D. disjunctus extract shows potential for development as a functional food ingredient or as a complementary treatment for diabetes in the future.
