Comparision of Bhutan Strains (Pleurotus eous) for Cultivation in Pattani Province

Abstract

The Bhutanese mushrooms are popular for consumption and had high market demand in Pattani Province. However, one of the main challenges in cultivating this mushroom to achieve high yield and quality is selecting the strain most suitable for Pattani. Currently, there are various Bhutanese mushroom strains cultivated in Thailand, each adapted to different environmental conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the most suitable mushroom strain for cultivation in Pattani Province., The experimental design used was the complete randomized design (CRD) with four replications. Five strains from the Department of Agriculture  had Bhutan 2, Bhutan 3, Bhutan 4, Bhutan 5, and Bhutan 6 .They were compared using the same growing medium during February to July 2022 and June to October 2022. at the Department of Agricultural and Fisheries Science, Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus,The results showed that  were statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) among strains in terms of mycelium growth, yield, and specific mushroom characteristics, including color, fruiting bodies size, yield weight per fruiting bodies , number of fruiting bodies ,  fruiting bodies per mycelium, and number of circular lifecycle per cultivation periods . Bhutanese strain 6 was identified as the most suitable strain, followed by Bhutan 5, Bhutan 4, Bhutan 3, and Bhutan 2. Therefore, Bhutan 6 should be recommended for development and extension  mushroom cultivators in Pattani Province to provide an alternative for local farmers.
