Antibacterial Activity of Extracts from Chanthaharuethai and Prasachandaeng Formulations
Main Article Content
Abstract
Nowadays, there are new diseases caused by bacterial infections increasing every year. Thai herbal medicine is a popular choice for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Chanthaharuethai and Prasachandang formulations are traditional Thai medicine used to treat microbial infections for a long time. This research aimed to study the antibacterial activities of extracts from Chanthaharuethai and Prasachandang formulations extracted using distilled water and 95% ethanol as solvents. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 are standard strains of pathogenic bacteria and were used as representative groups of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, respectively. The result of antibacterial activities found that both extracts that extraction with 95% ethanol solvent at dilute concentrations of 100-500 µg/ml effectively inhibited both gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens higher than that of distilled water. The extract of Prasachandang formulation that was extracted with 95% ethanol at a dilute concentration of 500 µg/ml gave the highest inhibition to S. aureus ATCC 25923. While the extract of Chanthaharuethai formulation extracted with 95% ethanol at a dilute concentration of 500 µg/ml gave the highest inhibition to E. coli ATCC 25922. The antimicrobial activity of the extract from Chanthaharuethai and Prasachandang formulations depends on the type of solvent used in the extraction and the concentration of the extract. However, further studies on the effects of extracts on probiotic microorganisms should be conducted to provide scientific information to support Thai herbal formulations in the future.
