Conversion of waste bamboo biomass to biochar for carbon sequestration
Keywords:
Biochar, Bamboo biomass waste, Carbon sequestration, Pyrolysis kilnAbstract
This research aimed to convert bamboo biomass waste into biochar by the pyrolysis process as a carbon sequestration material. A simple pyrolysis kiln was collaboratively developed with the local community. It was found that the biomass could be converted into biochar with a yield of 30.21±2.24%. The resulting biochar exhibited a honeycomb-like porous surface, with carbon and oxygen as the main components at 73.65% and 14.46%, respectively. The H/C and O/C ratios were 0.06 and 0.38, respectively, indicating that the biochar could remain stable in the environment for more than 100 years. In addition, the biochar kiln is small, easy to construct, smoke-free, low-cost, user-friendly, requires minimal production time, and is environmentally friendly.
