Adaptation of Rice Farmers to Climate Change: A Study in Pong Daeng Subdistrict, Mueang Tak District, Tak Province
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research’s objective was to study the adaptation of rice farmers to climate change. The population consisted of 320 rice farmers in Pong Daeng subdistrict, Mueang Tak district, Tak province, selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using an interview questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the adaptation of rice farmers to climate change includes the use of information and weather forecasts (3.97) and the adoption of broadcast seeding methods (3.92) adjusting the cropping calendar (mean = 3.76), increasing water storage sources in cultivated areas (mean = 3.61), and selecting rice varieties resistant to drought, flooding, diseases, and pests (mean = 3.50). Soil management and conservation showed a moderate level of adaptation (mean = 2.38), while the lowest level was converting rice fields to integrated farming (mean = 2.18). Regarding adaptation problems, the most significant issue reported by farmers was the lack of effective water management systems, including irrigation systems, flood drainage systems, and water retention areas (mean = 3.81). The most prominent recommendation from farmers was the development of water management systems, such as irrigation systems, flood drainage systems, and community floodwater retention areas (mean = 4.29). Based on the study findings, it is recommended that government agencies accelerate the development of irrigation and drainage systems to ensure comprehensive water management across agricultural areas. Additionally, agricultural extension agencies should provide support in terms of knowledge, technology, and efficient farm management practices to enhance farmers’ capacity to effectively adapt to climate change.
