EFFECT OF PLANTING DATES OF BLACKBEAN (VIGNA UNGUICULATA L.) ON GROWTH AND YIELD AS RELAY CROPS IN CORN UNDER RAINFED UPLAND AREA

Abstract

The experiment was conducted at Mae Hia Agricultural Research Station and Training Center, Chiang Mai University. The objective of the study was to investigate on the effect of blackbean planting date on growth and yield in corn/blackbean relay cropping under rainfed upland area. Planting dates of blackbean were 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 days after corn emergence. The result showed that yield and yield components of corn in all relay cropping planting dates were not significantly different, average yield were 5,703. 1-5,828.6 kg/ha. Blackbean in relay cropping of 60 days gave the highest yield 878.1 kg/ha and at 60, 70 days gave higher yield than that of the sole blackbean in all planting dates. Growth in terms of dry matter, crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and leaf area index (LAI) were markly reduced as the crop planting date was delayed. The land equivalent ratio (LER) of all relay cropping planting dates were more than 1.
