Main Article Content
Abstract
The objectives of this study were to: (1) examine the basic personal information and agricultural production activities of model farmers, and (2) analyze the characteristics of model farmers in Narathiwat Province. This qualitative research employed purposive sampling to select 20 model farmers aged 25–60 years with over 5 years of farming experience and recipients of outstanding farmer awards. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observations and analyzed using content analysis. The results showed that most model farmers were male, with an average age of 50.60 years, and had education levels above the compulsory requirement. They owned an average of 23.90 rai of agricultural land and had over 20 years of farming experience. Most were members of Agricultural Knowledge Management Centers and earned an average annual agricultural income of 540,792 baht. All practiced integrated farming used a combination of organic and chemical fertilizers, and nearly all held GAP certification. The major agricultural challenges reported were plant diseases and pests. The key characteristics contributing to the success of model farmers included: (1) self-awareness; (2) management skills; (3) creative thinking and innovation; (4) information technology skills; (5) coordination and networking skills; (6) knowledge transfer skills; (7) risk-taking; (8) tolerance; (9) public consciousness; (10) lifelong learning; and (11) self-esteem in their profession. These characteristics can serve as guidelines for developing other farmers, enhancing agricultural promotion policies, and designing training programs tailored to farmers' needs.
