Abstract

In this current study, ethanolic plant extracts from Annona squamosal leaf, Eucalyptus globulus leaf and Cassia fistula pods were assessed for their toxicity to Musca domestica larvae. The larval property was conducted using a spraying technique against each extract in various concentrations [control group, 25, 50 and 100%, w/v]. Twenty five maggots, each were introduced into treatment trays containing a piece of fish head as their food. A minimum of four replications was kept for each concentration along with the control. The percentage larval mortality was assessed after 24, 48 and 72 hours of exposure. It was revealed that these plant extracts exhibited median lethal concentrations to kill 50%; LC50, (%, w/v) of the treated larvae in 24 hours of 37.802 (Y=1.207x-8.767), 70.000 (Y=1.635X-7.354) and 53.515 (Y=1.297X-2.633). The LC50 at 48 hours of all plant extracts were 44.597 (Y=1.074X-8.328) 50.279(Y=1.165X-9.239), 55.413 (Y=1.194X-5.513). Meanwhile, the LC50 at 72 hours of all plant extracts were (Y=0.849X-9.122), 27.201 (Y=1.070X-9.759) and 21.312 (Y=0.975X-9.891), respectively. Based upon the mortality rate, the concentration at 100% (w/v) of A. squamosal leaf extract showed the highest effectiveness in controlling the larvae with100% (w/v) mortality after exposure for 72 hours. No mortality of the insects was found in any of the controls. Additionally, mortality increased when exposed to a higher concentration in all trials. From these results, all plants extracts trended to be further utilized in preventing this M. domestica and other insect pests in the area.
