Abstract

Thai herbal compress balls are products used for compressing to relieve body aches and pains. However, the preparation and usage methods of this product can be quite complex, taking a long time and involving multiple steps. The research team, therefore, had conceived the idea to develop Thai herbal compress ball products in a format that is easy to prepare and convenient to use. We developed gelatin patches from fish scales with the inclusion of extracts from Thai herbal compress ball ingredients. A microwave-assisted extraction method was used for extracting gelatin from fish scales and extracting compounds from Thai herbal compress ball ingredients. We also utilized herbal extracts prepared from the research on development of Thai Herbal compress ball extraction method by using microwave-assisted extraction. In addition, we formulated seven gelatin-based herbal compress patch formulations and assessed their quality based on modified criteria from the Community Product Standards (1622/2022). The findings revealed that the 5th formula of the patch, which consisted of 15 grams of gelatin, 5 grams of Thai herbal extract, 1 gram of carboxymethyl cellulose, 2 grams of propylene glycol, 1 gram of glycerin, and 76 grams of distilled water, was the highest-quality formulation. The patches had a consistent, semi-solid texture with clear flexibility, and when applied to the skin, they did not cause irritation and could be easily removed. They exhibit excellent stability when stored in a cool place and protected from light and retains its condition at room temperature for up to 2 years. Therefore, this product could be further investigated for its therapeutic effectiveness in future volunteer studies.
