Abstract

This study was conducted to test the effects of dietary rice distillers’ dried grains (RDDG) from local liquor plants in northern Thailand on the growth performance of red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus x O. mossambicus). Five isonitrogenous (30% crude protein) practical diets were formulated to contain 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% DDG from sticky rice (designated as RDDG0, RDDG5, RDDG10, RDDG15, and RDDG20), respectively. Red tilapia averaging 5-7 cm were randomly distributed into 150-L glass tanks. Three replicate groups of fish were fed one of the experimental diets two times a day for 60 days. After the end of the trial, growth parameters (final weight, weight gain, average daily gain, and specific growth rate) of fish fed with 5-10% RDDG diets were significantly higher than other groups (P<.05). Fish fed the 10% RDDG diet exhibited better feed efficiency  and were significantly higher than other groups (P<.05). There were no significant changes in the survival rate of fish among the different treatments (P>.05). The results of this experiment suggest that RDDG from sticky rice has the potential to both replace high protein and low protein ingredients and could be used up to 10% in diet formulas to enhance the growth performance and feed efficiency of red tilapia.
