Abstract

The aim of this research is to study the influence of ENSO on hotspot density in forest area during wet and dry seasons in the upper Northern region of Thailand. This study uses image from Terra satellite in MODIS (Moderate Resolution Image Spectroradiometer) systems for study hotspot density in ENSO event during year 2004 to 2020. This study will be considered hotspot density from Terra satellite in MODIS systems in during El Nino, Moderate and La Nina period by divided wet season and dry season. After that, finding hotspot data by Kernel density process and Raster calculator process by using ArcGIS software in version 10.0 and clip boundary of upper Northern of Thailand all 9 provinces for calculate hotspot density maximum per 1 km2 in each province. The last process, compared hotspot density in each province by compared between hotspot density in El Nino – Moderate, La Nina – Moderate and El Nino – La Nina period by uses statistics paired sample t-test method at 95% confidence. The results showed that in wet season, hotspot density in forest area in the upper Northern of Thailand in El Nino period maximum is 65 spot per 1 km2, minimum is 0 spot per 1 km2, in Moderate period maximum is 57 spot per 1 km2, minimum is 0 spot per 1 km2 and La Nina period maximum is 5 spot per 1 km2, minimum is 0 spot per 1 km2. The hotspot density in El Nino period is not difference hotspot density in Moderate period at 0.05 significant level, hotspot density in La Nina period less than hotspot density in Moderate period and hotspot density in El Nino period greater than hotspot density in La Nina period at 0.05 significant level. In dry season, hotspot density in El Nino period maximum is 3,068 spot per
1 km2, minimum is 0 spot per 1 km2, in Moderate period maximum is 1,619 spot per 1 km2, minimum is 0 spot per 1 km2 and La Nina period maximum is 1,494 spot per 1 km2, minimum is 0 spot per 1 km2. The hotspot density in El Nino period greater than hotspot density in Moderate and La Nina period and hotspot density in La Nina period less than hotspot density in Moderate period at 0.05 significant level.  Thus, during El Nino period, the risk of wildfires in the upper Northern of Thailand is higher than in Moderate and La Nina period.
