The objectives of this study were to investigate metabolism rate of 10-kilogram male pig. Oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production and respiratory quotient were observed. The results showed that pig fed 20 % crude protein diet (46.54 ml/kgBW0.75/min) showed higher oxygen consumption (P < 0.01) more than pig fed protein free diet (42.67 ml/kgBW0.75/min) or fasted pig (37.70 ml/kgBW0.75/min). Similarly results as oxygen consumption values, the pig fed protein diet showed highest carbon dioxide production (P < 0.01) more than the others treatments. The respiratory quotient calculated values was similar among all treatments (P > 0.05) between 57.43 to 58.38. Oxygen consumption value as 4.97 ml/kgBW0.75/min over fasted treatment was due to the energy sources (carbohydrate and fat) contained in the protein free diet (200 g/h/d). For the protein diet treatment, 8.84 ml/kgBW0.75/min over fasted pig was observed (160 g/h/d of energy source and 40 g/h/d of protein). It was concluded that the oxygen consumption for metabolize protein is higher than carbohydrate and fat.
