Effects of UV-C irradiation on the quality changes and disease control of ‘Nam Dok Mai Sithong’ mangoes during storage
Main Article Content
Abstract
Mango is an economically important fruit in Thailand. Exported mangoes often face some problems with loss of quality, disease, and insect infestation. By irradiating UV-C rays, it can delay deterioration and control disease in many types of fruits including mango. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of UV-C irradiation on the changes of quality and disease control of ‘Nam Dok Mai SiThong’ mango during storage at room temperature (25±2 °C) by using a completely randomized design (CRD), which consists of 4 treatments: UV-C irradiation at doses of 0 (control), 2.47, 4.93 and 7.37 KJ/m2. The experiment was done by growing the fungus that causes anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) on the peels of mango fruit. Then stored at room temperature (25±2 °C). The results were recorded every 3 days. It was found that UV-C radiation had no effect on the percentage of weight loss, firmness, green value (a*), yellow value (b*) of the peel, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and vitamin C content of ‘Nam Dok Mai SiThong’ mangoes during 12 days of storage, while the brightness value (L*) of ‘Nam Dok Mai SiThong’ mango peels decreased. Without UV-C irradiation treatment, it had a higher L* value than UV-C treated at all levels after 3, 9, and 12 days of storage, with the values of 73.99, 68.33, and 67.63, respectively. In addition, without UV-C irradiation treatment was infestation and growth of the fungus C. gloeosporioides cause of anthracnose, with the level of 3.2, while all three levels of UV-C irradiation were able to control the growth of the anthracnose fungus in ‘Nam Dok Mai SiThong’ mangoes after stored at 12 days.
