LIFE TABLE STUDIES OF SOYBEAN LEAF FOLDER, <I> Lamprosema diemenalis </I> Guen. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Abstract
The fate of a cohort of the soybean leaf folder, Lamprosema diemenalis Guen. from initial egg stage to the ultimate adult emergence of the last individual was studied. The thousand eggs hatched to produce 850 small larvae, 699, 600, 546 and 493 survived to become second, third, fourth and fifth instar larvae respectively, and 450 reached the pupal and adult stages. When the egg population changed to a population of first instar larvae, the k-value of the mortality factor concerned was 0.071. For the second to fifth instar larvae, the k-values were 0.084. 0.067, 0.041, 0.044 and 0.040 respectively. The k-values were added up and their sum equals the generation mortality K = 0.347
The Ix mx products for each pivotal age in days were summed, the total being the value of net reproduction rate, R = 23.776 in each generation. The intrinsic rate of increase, rm for L. diemenalis was found to be 0.0744 Thus, the finite rate of increase is 1.0772 per head per day. The stable age distribution was heavily loaded with the immature stages of the leaf folders. Only 70.9067 percent of the total number of individuals in the stable age distribution were adults. In this experiment 1/ = 1.4520, and thus instantaneous birth rate, b = 0.6634. The difference between rm and b was determined, as the instantaneous death rate, d = 0.5898.
