Hybridization of Local Amaryllis
Main Article Content
Abstract
Nine crosses of self and cross pollination of 3 varieties of local amaryllis, i.e. red-flowered (R), orange flowered (O) and pink-flowered (P) were carried out. The results showed failure in self pollination. Pollinated flowers were able to produce pods giving fruit set percentages of 96.67,96,00 and100% in crosses of R, O and P, respectively, but the pods failed to reach mature stage. Six cross fertilizations were successful, having fruit set percentages of 95.34, 98.67, 93.34, 100, 100 and 100% and mature pod percentages of 22.67, 14.00, 87.33, 98.67, 100 and 96.67% in crosses of R x O, O x R, R x P, P x R, P x O and O x P, respectively. Seeds collected from mature pods germinated within 14 to 30 days with germinating percentages ranging from 79.06 to 93.25%.
