Effects of Hemp Extract Supplementation in Semen Extender on Boar Semen Quality at Chilled Temperature
Main Article Content
Abstract
The main problem with artificial insemination on small farms in Thailand is the chilled storage of boar semen, which results in oxidative stress affecting to reduce semen quality.of boar. Therefore, this study was conducted to supplement the hemp extract containing cannabinoids as antioxidants in chilled boar semen extenders. Semen samples from 2 boars (Duroc Jersey) were diluted with Beltsville thawing solution extender (BTS) enriched with hemp extract at 5 levels of cannabidiol (CBD) concentrations: 0, 5, 10, 25, and 50 µg CBD /ml. The semen samples were kept at 17 °C for 0, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours and analyzed using a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) to determine the percentages of motile, static, and progressive sperm. It was found that the static of the group supplemented with hemp extract with 5 µg CBD/ml tended to be the lowest, and the progressive tended to be the highest. Especially, 12 hours of storage were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Finally, the use of extenders containing 5 µg CBD/ml of hemp extract was shown to be a trend in maintaining the quality of sperm in boar semen extenders used as a chilled semen formula.
